O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She experienced significant defeats in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. They were stunned by the decision and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the most talented contestant. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. Her performance on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol.
